Update on Daycare Centres after ABC
Everything has been said and lamented about the precipitious rise and fall of ABC, Australia's erstwhile largest chain of daycare services and one of the largest in the world, but it's a good thing that operations continue on. Actually, nowhere but here it did happen that a single conglomerate was able to capture so much of the daycare needs of millions of working mums; and the fall-out from ABC's troubles have left plenty of parents worried about having their arrangements for child care disrupted with little alternative in sight.
Of over a thousand centres, some seven hundred remain under this daycare giant's umbrella, with the rest spinned off to localised, community-based and private operators, marking somewhat a return to the days when daycare services were undertaken as a communal service. A rescue package has saved the national daycare system from collapse, and eased the worries of many people concerned for their kids, even as shareholders are left holding on to seriously devalued stocks and can only await for an improvement in the financial climate before moving on.
Following this debacle, stricter staffing standards have been called for, and the chain is engaged in rebranding itself to allay fears over the quality of care parents can expect for their children. Smaller family and community-run daycare centres on the other hand are experiencing a resurgent interest in how they can satisfy the needs of parents who need support in their family and worklives. |
